Show & Shine 2005: the sun shone again on Show & Shine!
Show & Shine 2005

In what seems to have become a tradition (knock on wood), the sun shone again on Show & Shine. This was by far the best weather we've ever had for this event, with bright blue skies and temperatures in the mid 70s. (When we named the event 10 years ago, "Shine" referred to the glossy finish of the BMWs on display, but if the powers that be think that it means the sun must shine, we won't correct them.)

Another tradition that held strong this year was attendance. While reports from other autumn car shows around the nation indicate a drop-off in participation, our lot was filled to capacity (350 cars) before noon. Over the course of the one-day event, an estimated 1,800-2,000 people attended. We fed more than 1,000 people in one hour, serving a free BBQ lunch of hamburgers, frankfurters, bratwurst, sauerkraut (for the brave), chips, beverages and dessert.

In addition to our normal "People's Choice" competition (winners listed below), this year we added two new programs; a "You Can Do It" BMW makeover, and a charity raffle to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. For the makeover, we took a stock 2001 325xi and added a ton of bolt-on upgrades, including a Euro-style front lip spoiler, pre-painted deck lid spoiler, pre-painted sunroof wind deflector, pre-painted grill trim covers, smoke-tint lenses, a Power Flow intake kit, high-performance ignition coils, a carbon fiber engine cover, 18" Ronal wheels and more. The transformation was quick and easy, turning a "plain Jane" 3 series into a more powerful, more beautiful Bimmer in just a couple of hours. Jon Broome, one of our top parts advisors, emceed the demonstration and narrated as Nicholas Hedstrom, a production artist in our creative department, performed the upgrades.

For the Komen raffle, Bavarian Autosport and our generous vendors donated several thousand dollars worth of merchandise, which was offered as three separate prize packages. 100% of the ticket sales went directly to the VT/NH Affiliates of the Komen Foundation. The raffle raised more than $1,500 for the cause, far exceeding our first-year goal of $1,000. ("Thank you!" to all those generous BMW enthusiasts who purchased tickets.) This charity raffle was conducted in addition to our famous free raffle, in which thousands of dollars worth of BMW parts and accessories are given away by Bavarian Autosport and its vendors.

The main event at Show & Shine is an informal concours in which owners compete for prizes in a friendly "People's Choice" competition. (No judges are used in the competition; winners are determined by popular vote and anyone in attendance is allowed to vote.) This year, the award for Best Interior, (a set of Bilstein shock absorbers and an Eibach spring set), was won by Stephen Brodd of Rhode Island for his 1999 M3 convertible that was loaded with top-of-the-line, custom electronics. Best Exterior, (a P21S car care kit, $400 AC Schnitzer gift certificate and Bavarian Autosport Ultimate car cover), was won by Jon Sorgi of Massachusetts for his 2001 330ci with Hamann widebody kit. Best of Show, (a Bavarian Autosport Tri-Flo exhaust system and Bavarian Autosport performance software upgrade), was won by Sal Cunha of Massachusetts for his gorgeous 1990 M3. The "Farthest Traveled" award went to Jose Castro of Florida, edging out several attendees from Canada.

Show & Shine is a totally free event: there is no charge for admission, no charge for entering a car in the competition, no charge to enter the free raffle and no charge for food or drinks. Next year's Show & Shine is scheduled for Sunday, October 1 at Bavarian Autosport headquarters in Portsmouth, NH.

Hope to see you there!
